If you haven't already, please read the Thursday Next series by Japer Fforde. Thursday is one of the strongest female characters I have read in years, second only to Scout Finch. Not only that, she has a loving family and kick ass job. And did I mention she can jump into fiction? The intertextual references are to die for! And not only that, but the book jumping allows Fforde to play with text, such as misspelling viruses that make all the words wrong, or adding extra punctuation. It is brilliant.
Fforde has created a rich and exciting character, with a hell of a story and I highly recommend these to anyone who enjoys books that are slightly different then the average novel. the only downside is after you finish all 6 books, there is nothing more yet :(
